paris-based architect dominique perrault has won first place in the international design competition
for the redevelopment of the 'new longchamp horse racecourse' in paris, france. observing the wide range
of buildings currently present on the historical racetrack, the design seeks to highlight the different
architecture elements that contribute to the identity of longchamp by an integration and transformation
of the surrounding landscape.

establishing a spinal column to the circulation of the project, 'les planches' is a large wooden
walkway that connects the north end of the racecourse with the south. the new topography
encourages the spaces' opening, their permeability with the landscape and a clear and instinctual
circulation for the general public. the routes are lined by five meter high stainless steel mesh
that acts as a shelter from the wind and the sun.

conceived as a structure with no front and no back, the grand stands is read as a series of
stacked plates that have been shifted to create a soft overhang effect from the west to the east.
the form directs the stands closer towards the finish line while a balcony is generated on
the opposite side. a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and raceway is provided
from every level.

the redevelopment is due to start in october 2013 and has a projected completion date of late 2015.

brussels-based JDS architects have received first place and the commission for the 'euralille youth centre' in lille, the firm's
premier project to be realized in france. the triangular plot accommodates three separate programmatic areas for a youth hostel,
kindergarten and offices, each placed in one of the site's corners. this distribution ensures maximum privacy while maintaining
close proximity between the spaces. the building's trifold form lifts upward at the street corners to generate open plazas which
activate pedestrian interactions along the bustling avenues.

the amount of daylight filtering into internal spaces dictated the elevational treatments and window configurations. the interior
facing elevations of the different wings overlook a central garden. the rooftop of the kindergarten is a vegetated
outdoor playing surface while the neighboring youth hostel features a series of walkout balconies from the rooms. the facade
of the offices ensures adequate natural lighting without harsh direct light.

the 'green cell' proposal by japanese architect kengo kuma of tokyo-based kengo kuma + associates has placed second
in the international competition for the new taipei city museum of art for taipei city, taiwan. an undulating double skin
generates the iconic form which radiates in a waving manner into the encompassing urbanscape. a main hall connects
the museum's program with a nearby train station, cable car, riverbank trail transforming the site into a dynamic hub.
the addition incorporates public amenities such as a park pavilion, retail, and flexible program to contribute to the city's
established context.

car and bus stop area

the main hall serves as a communications hub, becoming a lively central space for workshops, exhibitions,
gathering and events. merging public and private areas creates the desired informal experience with art
and artists. the exterior skin touches down to the ground plane generating 'in-between spaces' which are
integrated throughout the galleries to moderate the region's climate. the sprawling canopy plays an important
role in the masterplan's sustainability as the steel mesh of the structural framework is capped with diverse
elements including EFTE cushions, LEDs, ventilation louvers, solar panels and green roof.

BIG architects: transitlager

copenhagen-based practice BIG architects have created 'transitlager', the winning competition proposal to renovate
and extend a warehouse in the industrial district of basel, switzerland. dating from the 1960s, the 18,000 square meter
concrete structure will receive an additional 7,000 square meters for residences and arts-related spaces to transform
the upcoming dreispitz neighborhood into a bustling arts district. visually separated into two stacked volumes,
the combination will become a hybrid of mixed-use program, rearranging the distribution within the existing floors
to merge activity from the art, commerce, work and living spaces.

encompassed by a network of intersecting railways, loading docks and turning radiuses, the zigzagged facade
and pointed corners become generated by the infrastructure. connections between existing public areas and nearby
botanical garden enforce the dynamic location of this new center. additional vibrant urban spaces and peaceful
gardens provide diverse atmospheres for various lifestyles and activities. the folded perimeter of the upper structure
optimizes interior daylight conditions and outward views from rooftop terraces placed within generated niches.
the exterior reflects the geometries of the surrounding context, creating a fresh appearance with a familiar character.

public green spaces

original walls have been removed to create flexible open plans while limited interventions and partitions feature
a minimal material palette of concrete surfaces to retain the sense of place and classic luxury. sparsely filled internal
arrangement increase feasibility for installations for businesses, ateliers and workshops.

'the stacking of two complimentary structures – one on top of the other – has generated a new take on the typology
of the communal courtyard. where the typical residential courtyard finds itself incarcerated by walls of program,
the roofyards of the transitlager combine the tranquility and communal space of the courtyard with the sunlight
and panoramic views of the penthouse. a penthouse for the people.'
