Beethoven Hall in Bonn / Zaha Hadid

A central priority in Zaha Hadid Architect’s urban design concept for a new Beethoven Festival Hall is linking the city of Bonn to the Rhine River promenade and leveraging that idea’s potential to enrich public life on the river’s edge.
Learning from the missed opportunities during the planning of the existing building in the 1950’s, Zaha Hadid Architect’ proposal not only incorporates a high degree of porosity in its site plan, but intensifies the connection by introducing a transparent “Rhine Foyer” into the building mass; a dramatic atrium that stretches from the City to the Rhine. With two main façades, the building presents itself in an open and inviting manner to the River and the City, allowing for deep visual links through its crystalline mass. The light Rhine Foyer will make audiences and performers feel comfortable and relaxed but simultaneously excited by the anticipation of a unique experience.
Site circulation can take place uninterrupted through various levels inside and around the building. Artificial landscape formations lead from inside the building to terraced outdoor areas, interweaving the elevated foyer levels with surrounding exterior plateaus. The stepped topography on the Rhine invites Bonn residents and visitors to informally enjoy outdoor performances. The main public route is a large diagonal passage, an ‘erosion’, running from the city through the Rhine Foyer and down a large exterior staircase to the river promenade. The promenade is sliced into curvilinear seating that gently step down to the Rhine, facing a seasonal floating performance area on the water’s edge. Illumination from within the foyer, embedded in the ground, and floating in the water will change the character of the site and building during evening performances.

The Cave by Gonzalo Vaíllo Martínez

Architecture student Gonzalo Vaíllo Martínez of the Universidad de Alcalá, Spain has designed a conceptual auditorium for the Tate Modern gallery in London.

Called The Cave, the design features a series of overlapping planted ramps, which would form the foyer and access routes into an underground auditorium.

The proposal intends to connect the Tate Modern with other landmarks in the area and incorporates the creation of a new park.

The project begun during an exchange programme with the Bartlett School of Architecture in London.

ORDINATION OF THE AREA AND NEW AUDITORIUM OF THE TATE MODERN
This is the Degree Project of Gonzalo Vaíllo Martínez. It was presented last September 2010 in the Universidad de Alcalá (Spain) with a mark of A.

The work was begun during an exchange program with the Professor Colin Fournier of the Bartlett School of Architecture and it was carried on with the tutor Ángel Verdasco Novalvos.

The project is focused on three essential parameters of London: the green areas, the icons and landmarks and the pedestrians. What it is searched is to recover the figure of the pedestrians and involve them again in the city. The public space is the basic network for getting it.

Focused on the Tate Modern as an icon which is isolated in its environment (particularly its back side), the project works in two overlapped scales: the necessity to connect the Tate with others landmarks and its own renovation and adaptation for the new social demands.

A new park is created whit the intention of solving it and a new auditorium was included.

Taking into account the important of the chimney in the skyline of London the new auditorium is buried for preserving the views over it.

This produces an inversion of the normal program of an auditorium, so the accesses and foyers are now over the music halls in directly relationship with the park and its new topography.

This produces that every kind of performance can be showed whit simple mechanical partitions depending on the capacity necessity.

Between them the public program of accesses, tickets and multifunctional rooms are developed.

iki, a practice based in Ankara, Turkey, have shared with us their competition proposal for a Concert Hall and Art Center for Ankara, capital city of Turkey. Additional renders, plans, sections and a brief architects description after the break.

The competition challenged participants to see architecture regarding a complex which consists a Local Municipality Building, Art Center, theatre hall and a big concert hall which will be made by remembrance of the famous Turkish classical musician “Ulvi Cemal Erkin”. The collaborative effort within the office, led by Hakan evkaya and Kutlu Bal, produced a proposal which has been combined all these functions in a one big box. Thus the outer space for city could be maximized.

All basic functions have been gathered by a core in the middle of the building. Waiting halls and circulation has been arranged around the core vertically. All system has been cladding by transparent façade which let the vision outside and inside. The relations with main street, across the street and the activity zone which is an part of the design was so important.
