australian studio, trident architects has designed 'melbourne street', a commercial unit
located in the middle of a residential neighborhood in north adelaide, australia.
the industrial structure is typical of other developments within the transitional streetscape,
an area that is changing due to a lack of properties in the nearby business district.

the building, surrounded by single-story residences dating back to the early 1900's, responds
to the scale of the adjacent setting, with the impact of the mass visually reduced by a vertically
applied timber screen. suspended above the entrance away from the glazed front facade, the
louvered panel facilitates a gradual transition between indoors and outdoor environments.
diffused light penetrates the interior spaces, further highlighting the transitional experience
created as a result of the tenuously balanced awning.
underside of timber awning
composed of three levels - a parking garage and two subsequent office and administration spaces
- the linear and transparent volume straddles the landscape, addressing limitations of the residential
site and maximizing the potential of the small plot of land.
