green heart - aalto university campus by luca peralta

green heart - aalto university campus by luca peralta

developed by luca peralta, the central campus for aalto university proposes a new figure ground, a new centrality, a new hierarchy of spaces in the site.
a permeable loop with three very generous gateways capable of absorbing and reorienting the pedestrian flow of the contextual surroundings,
allows for organisation of the transport system as a ‘quad – green heart’, making it completely car free. users can arrive here from the two
adjacent subway stations, from the bus stops, from the underground parking or simply by walking or cycling along the boulevards in the
direction of the three grand gateways.

a fluid and permeable architecture that embrace outdoor public spaces. the different areas required by the program are organized within a
single building embracing a public outdoor area accessible 24 hours to all: students, faculty members and simple citizens. as an organizational
system the interior spaces can function as one building or as eight attached and highly interconnected ones: each department as self sufficient,
with independent flight of stairs, elevators, fire stairs at appropriate distance, technical shafts, technical spaces underground, toilets etc. both the entrances under
the arches of the three grand gateways and the entrances placed in central atriums can be used by the users of the commercial area/restaurants and by the user
of the programs above. the very particular system of entry points, if needed, can adapt to respond to more selective organization of flow, i.e. more or less department
oriented, more or less private/public, more or less 24 hour accessibility etc.

alleswirdgut: BIO campus istanbul

alleswirdgut: BIO campus istanbul

vienna-based alleswirdgut have created a competition proposal for the 'BIO campus', an eco-city which fully considers its environmental impact
in istanbul, turkey. the masterplan minimizes energy, food and water inputs as well as waste heat and pollution in the form of CO2. the sun's rays are
filtered through the facades to reduce the need for artificial lighting and connect with the outdoors. efficient air handling combined with radiant cooling systems
will minimize stress on the electrical consumption.

an emphasis on the urban planning will establish a higher density arrangement, keeping resources and residents close to each other.
reducing reliance on transportation emits less greenhouse gases, conserving both resources and energy.

sou fujimoto: beton hala waterfront centre

'beton hala waterfront centre' by sou fujimoto, belgrade, serbia

japanese practice sou fujimoto architects has completed the concept for the 'beton hala waterfront centre' in belgrade, serbia.
with its particular location at the edge of medieval beton hala, kalemegden park, sava river and adjacent to the fortress wall,
the project seamlessly grabs each facet and entwines them into a literally spiraling structure of ramping ribbons in what fujimoto
calls a 'floating cloud.' the eye of the circulatory whirlpool houses a new square and part of an exterior exhibition space which continues
through under the massive roof structure. a restaurant and cafe are located under the inhabitable canopy along the riverfront,
with commercial spaces closer to the fortress for easier access from the street. the woven bedlam of rings allow the user to
find their ideal space based on the variety of programs existing in different sections, as well as the proximity of the surrounding sites.

the encircling bridges above ground separate the pedestrian from the subterranean parking garage and the transportation hub linking
the ferry terminal, tram and bus. the structure exists as an array of social and transport functions, located in the middle of a culturally rich
site, which joins the various components in a free-flowing circulatory whirlwind.

portuguese firm frederico valsassina arquitectos has sent images of their latest project, 'house in quinta patino' in estoril, portugal.
the rectangular footprint arranges the living spaces within a modular arrangement of compartments and openings, integrating outdoor
courtyards into the internal configuration. placing all of these habitable spaces inside the four perimeter walls makes a structure
which appears larger than it actually is. rectilinear voids within each of the elevations extend the interior rooms to the outside zones
and views to the irregular rock cliff which borders the site. matures trees on the property and well as vegetation walls within the open-air voids
positioned within the plan. large wooden plank window shutters shield from solar gain or doors seal off interior courtyards for privacy,
contrasting with the gray concrete exterior walls when closed or revealing the transparency through the home.

an entry path leading to the home terminates within a courtyard. a hall leads to the living and dining area and bathroom on the western side
of the plan while the service spaces and kitchen are positioned across a courtyard. a flight of stairs leads to the upper level master suite with an office,
closets and bathrooms as well as three suites. all rooms but one has access to a private terrace.
